- • A playing-card deck
- • A quiet corner with the fan off

Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Clear a tiny job site
Wipe a small patch of the coffee table so the cards sit flat. Turn off any nearby fan or vent that could puff the house over. You only need a dinner-plate-size workspace.
Step 2: Raise a three-card triangle
Lean two cards together into an A-frame and rest a third across the peak as a roof. Stop there if it already looks charmingly unstable. Extra stories are optional and usually collapse, which kids love anyway.
Step 3: Seat the contractor
Sit your elf beside the triangle with one extra card in hand, as if the next wall is still under review. Angle the face toward the doorway so the first person downstairs sees the whole scene.
