Lamp Shade Lookout: Bright Idea Watch

The lampshade became a lighthouse, and your elf took the night watch. They are on the rim looking like they spotted something important, probably snacks. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
Turn the lamp off and let bulbs cool completely; never put the elf on a hot shade or cover a halogen bulb.

- • A table lamp (off and cool)
- • A side table
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Kill the heat
Switch the lamp off and wait until the shade is cool to the touch. A warm bulb plus felt is a bad bright idea.
Step 2: Pick a sturdy shade
A fabric drum shade holds an elf better than a tiny paper one. If it wobbles, sit them on the table hugging the base instead.
Step 3: Perch the lookout
Sit the elf on the shade rim, feet dangling, scanning the room. Kids will follow their gaze and invent a story.
Step 4: Leave a signal flag
Tuck a tissue or sticky note as a tiny flag. It looks like they are signaling the couch across the sea of carpet.
Pro Tips:
- • LED bulbs stay cooler, but still wait.
- • Do this on a lamp they walk past in the morning.
- • A pair of toy binoculars is extra if you have them.
- • Move the elf before anyone turns the lamp on for homework.
