Frame Photobomb: Shelf Surprise

Published on October 3, 2026
The family photo gained a member. Your elf hauled themselves up the frame by the couch and is grinning like they were there the whole time. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
Use a frame that sits steady. Do not hang the elf from a frame on a nail.
You Will Need This:
- • Your holiday elf
- • A standing photo frame
- • A shelf or side table by the couch
- • A clear spot so the frame cannot fall
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Pick a picture
Choose a standing frame already on a shelf or side table near the couch. A photo of the family is the funniest one to crash.
Step 2: Steady the stage
Push the frame back from the edge. If it wobbles, lean it against a book so it cannot tip when the elf touches it.
Step 3: Climb into the shot
Stand the elf behind the frame so only the hat and eyes show over the top, both hands gripping the frame like they just pulled themselves up. The face should line up with the people in the photo.
Step 4: Sign the picture
A sticky note on the shelf that says “I was there!” After the laugh, the elf moves on and the photo goes back to being a photo.
Pro Tips:
- • Eyes over the frame read instantly. The whole elf standing beside it does not.
- • A crowded family photo is a better crash than a landscape.
- • Match the elf’s grin to the people in the picture.
- • Skip glass frames on a high shelf.
