Game Controller Coach: Level-Up Lesson

Published on August 28, 2025
Somebody stayed up for one more round and appointed themselves coach. Your elf is on the controller like the high score is a North Pole assignment. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
Power the console off, keep cords untangled, and do not leave a controller on the floor as a trip or chew toy.
You Will Need This:
- • Your holiday elf
- • A game controller (powered off)
- • The couch or a game chair
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Turn the system off
Power down so nobody boots a game at 6 a.m. by bumping a stick. The lesson is pretend; the console can sleep.
Step 2: Park the controller
Set it on a couch cushion like a tiny desk. Kids see “gaming” faster than if it is still in the basket.
Step 3: Seat the coach
Sit the elf on the controller or right behind it, pointing at a button. They should look like they are explaining a combo nobody asked for.
Step 4: Leave a high-score note
Scribble “NEW RECORD” on a sticky note. Kids will demand a rematch before their socks are on.
Pro Tips:
- • Use the kid’s actual controller so the call-out feels personal.
- • A second stuffed animal as a “teammate” is extra funny.
- • Keep snacks off the buttons; crumbs in analog sticks are a real punishment.
- • Move the controller back to its shelf after the reveal if you have a chewer.
