Security is tight at the mudroom gate. Your elf is posted with a dummy remote, looking like one button could change everything. The actual garage opener stays in your pocket, because holiday magic should not include a 2 a.m. door cycle. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. Use a fake TV remote only and keep the live garage opener in your pocket so nobody can press the real door.
You Will Need This:
- • Your holiday elf
- • A mudroom bench or hook
- • A spare TV remote with batteries out
- • Your live garage opener, in your pocket
- • Optional: posable boy elf if you want a posable guard who can hold the fake remote like a very serious clicker.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Pocket the live opener
Take the real garage clicker off the hook and put it in your pocket or a high drawer. If a spare live remote exists, hide that too. This gag cannot include a working door button.
Step 2: Stage a fake remote only
Use a TV remote with the batteries removed, or any dummy clicker that cannot open anything. A sticky note that says “Garage” is the costume. Never label a live opener for fun.
Step 3: Post the guard
Sit your elf on the mudroom bench with both hands on the fake remote. A serious night-watch face sells it. Keep the scene away from the actual wall button.
Step 4: No test presses
Do not demonstrate the real door as part of the joke. In the morning, kids can “relieve the guard.” You put the live opener back only when the elf is packed away.
