Mop Bucket Lookout: Cleanup Captain

Somebody has to supervise the mop, and your elf appointed themselves cleanup captain. Park them on a dry bucket with the mop standing nearby like a ship’s mast. It is a two-minute laundry-room surprise that makes the boring corner of the house feel like a plot twist. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
Use a completely dry mop bucket with no cleaner in it, keep the mop standing so it cannot fall, and keep kids from climbing the bucket.
You Will Need This:
- • Your holiday elf
- • A dry mop bucket
- • A mop or broom
- • A cleaning cloth as a flag
- • Optional: tiny mop and metal bucket set if you want a pint-size crew standing next to the elf's real mop.
- • Optional: pack of yellow sticky notes if you want a little caution sign stuck on the bucket.
- • Optional: tiny mop, broom and plunger if you want a pint-size crew lined up by the bucket.
- • Optional: tiny wheelbarrow if you want the captain hauling supplies.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Empty and dry the bucket
Dump any water, rinse if needed, and dry the bucket with a towel so the elf will not sit in cleaner residue. Set it on the laundry-room or mudroom floor against a wall. Keep spray bottles closed and on a high shelf.
Step 2: Raise the mop mast
Stand the mop in the bucket or lean it in the corner so the handle looks like a mast. Drape a microfiber cloth over the handle as a flag. Make sure the mop cannot slide and hit anyone walking by.
Step 3: Seat the captain
Sit your elf on the dry bucket rim with both legs inside, or stand them on an overturned smaller caddy if the rim is too slick. Give them the cloth “flag” in one hand. Face the doorway so the first person carrying laundry sees the joke.
Step 4: Post the duty roster
Write “Deck is closed. Bucket is dry.” on a sticky note and stick it to the bucket. In the morning, let kids salute the captain, then put the mop away before anyone fills the bucket. Do not leave the bucket in a walkway.

- • If the rim is wet even after wiping, sit the elf on a folded towel on the closed lid of a hamper instead.
