The marker caps staged a rainbow mountain, and your elf is determined to summit before breakfast. Stack a handful of caps into a tiny peak on the craft table and pose the elf halfway up like a climber who packed snacks but forgot a rope. It is bright, fast, and uses the mess already living in the art caddy. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.

Marker caps are a choking size, so build this on a high table, keep extra caps in a cup, and put every cap back on a marker before kids play nearby.

You Will Need This:

  • • Your holiday elf
  • • A handful of marker caps
  • • A craft table or tray
  • • A sheet of paper as the mountain slope

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Make a rainbow pile

Dump a handful of marker caps onto a tray or sheet of paper so they cannot roll onto the floor. Build a short mound, tallest in the middle, mixing colors like a sherbet pile. Cap every leftover marker so the pens do not dry out overnight.

Step 2: Add a climbing path

Line four or five caps in a rising staircase up one side of the pile. Leave the other side messy so it still looks like a mountain, not a store display. Keep the tray away from the table edge.

Step 3: Put the elf on the slope

Sit your elf on a wide cap with both hands reaching for the next one, or stand them on the paper “snow” at the base looking up. Bend the knees so they look mid-climb. Do not balance them on a single skinny cap that will dump them onto the floor.

Step 4: Plant a summit flag

Write “Almost there!” on a tiny paper flag, tape it to a toothpick, and stick the toothpick in a cap at the top, not into the doll. In the morning, let kids count colors, then recap every marker before the art bin goes away. Sweep the tray so no cap hides under paper.

Pro Tips:

  • • Washable-marker caps are less tragic if one goes missing than permanent-marker caps.
  • • A muffin tin keeps extra caps from rolling during the photo.
  • • White paper under the mountain makes the rainbow pop.
  • • If you have a toddler, skip the loose-cap pile and use capped markers standing in a cup instead.
