Measuring-Tape Workshop: DIY Drawer

The junk drawer already has a tape measure. Tonight the holiday elf opened a one-tool workshop. Two minutes. This is a measure night, not an art night and not a garden night. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
Retract the tape before you walk away — the blade snaps back. Keep real tools with sharp edges in the drawer. Sit the elf on the bench or the open drawer, not on a power tool.
You Will Need This:
- • Your holiday elf
- • A tape measure
- • A pencil
- • The open junk drawer, a workbench, or a cleared end of a table
- • Optional: a scrap of paper with a fake measurement ("Shelf: 3 elf-feet")
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Set the shop
Open the drawer or clear a small patch of table. Lay the tape measure out a foot, not across the room. Put sharp tools back.
Step 2: Pose the elf
Sit the posable elf on the drawer edge or on the table with both hands on the tape, as if they are reading a length. They are the crew, not climbing a toolbox.
Step 3: Add the tiny details
The pencil and the scrap of paper are enough. Retract most of the blade after the photo if you stage at night, or weight the tape so it cannot snap. Do not add paint. Do not add a full tool wall.
Step 4: When kids find it
They find it when someone opens that drawer, or when they sit at the table. Retract the tape before the morning rush.
Pro Tips:
- • One foot of tape is a scene. A 25-foot blade across the hall is a trip.
- • A pencil reads as work. A full drill does not belong in a kid photo.
- • If the drawer is a hazard pile, take the tape and pencil to the table.
- • This is not a painting night. Leave the brushes in the cabinet.
