Ornament Hook Workshop: Tree Prep Helper

Published on August 11, 2025
Tree night is coming, and your elf opened an unofficial hook workshop on the coffee table. Pour ornament hooks into a bowl, leave a few ornaments unhooked, and sit the elf like they are doing quality control. It is a two-minute setup that makes decorating feel like it already started. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
Keep metal ornament hooks in a bowl, not loose on the floor, and keep breakable ornaments on a table away from pets and toddlers.
You Will Need This:
- • Your holiday elf
- • A small bowl of ornament hooks
- • Two or three unbreakable ornaments
- • The ornament storage box or a tray
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Open the ornament box
Set the ornament box or a tray on the coffee table and take out two or three shatterproof ornaments. Leave the rest packed. If you only have glass, use the plastic ones from the kids’ tree instead.
Step 2: Pour the hook inventory
Dump a small handful of ornament hooks into a bowl or mug so they cannot scatter. Hang one hook on one ornament and leave the others waiting. Keep extra hooks in the original bag, not on the rug.
Step 3: Put the elf on quality control
Sit your elf on the box lid with a hook in both hands, reaching toward an ornament. You can also stand them inside an empty box compartment like a packing elf. Face them toward the room so the workshop is obvious.
Step 4: Leave the prep order
Write “Hooks first. Tree later.” on a sticky note and stick it to the box. In the morning, let kids hang one ornament on a nearby plant or banister, then pack the hooks away. Count the hooks so the vacuum does not eat them.
Pro Tips:
- • Shatterproof ball ornaments are the only ones worth leaving out overnight.
- • A muffin tin cup is a safer hook bowl than a plate.
- • Gold hooks photograph better than barely-there clear ones.
- • If the tree is already up, hang the “inspected” ornament on a low, sturdy branch.
