The stockings looked like a ladder, and your elf started a rescue climb toward the mantel. Hang them as you normally do, sit the elf in the lowest stocking or on the hearth with both hands on the next one, and keep the fireplace completely off. Do not set this near a lit fireplace, wood stove, or hot glass doors; use an unlit hearth or a mantel with the fire off and screened.

- • A sticky-note rescue flag
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Confirm the fire is off
Make sure the fireplace is cold, the gas is off, and the screen is closed. If you have a fake mantel on a bookshelf, use that instead. Never pose an elf on a hot hearth.
Step 2: Hang a stocking ladder
Hang two or three stockings in a row so they overlap like ladder rungs. A command hook on a bookshelf works if you do not have a mantel. Keep stocking hangers from scratching the wood.
Step 3: Start the climb
Sit your elf in the lowest stocking with both hands reaching for the next cuff, or stand them on the hearth holding the first stocking. Do not wedge them behind a hanging iron. Face the living room.
Step 4: Leave a rescue flag
Write “Almost to the cookies.” on a sticky note and clip it to the highest stocking. In the morning, let kids “boost” the elf to the next stocking, then hang them back on a shelf. If you use a real fireplace later that day, move the elf first.
