Your elf signed up for dog-walking duty and then barely made it off the shoe tray. Clip a leash to a stuffed animal (or drape it near the real leash hook) and pose the elf like the walk is already a lot. Real pets can watch. They should not be wearing the elf. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.

Never clip a leash to a real pet for this scene, keep the elf away from a dog who chews toys, and hang extra leashes so they are not a trip line.

You Will Need This:

  • • Your holiday elf
  • • A dog or cat leash
  • • A stuffed animal stand-in
  • • The mudroom hook rail or shoe tray

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Pick a fake walk

Use the mudroom, back door, or the hook where leashes already live. Set a stuffed animal on the shoe tray as the “dog.” Keep the real pet’s current leash hung up so nobody grabs the prop by mistake on a real walk.

Step 2: Clip the prop leash

Clip the leash to the stuffed animal’s collar or ribbon, or loop it loosely around a stuffed paw. Coil extra leash so it is not a trip line across the floor. If you only have one leash, use a leftover ribbon as the elf’s lead instead.

Step 3: Pose the walker

Stand your elf holding the leash handle with both hands, leaning back as if the stuffed animal is stronger. You can also sit them on a shoe with the leash over one shoulder. Keep the real dog in another room if they steal stuffed animals.

Step 4: Leave the walk log

Write “Two minutes. That’s a walk.” on a sticky note and stick it to the door. In the morning, let kids “walk” the stuffed animal to the living room, then hang the real leash back on its hook. Check that no clip is left on a real collar.

Pro Tips:

  • • A stuffed animal with a collar clip photographs more clearly than looping ribbon.
  • • A short leash is safer overnight than a retractable one.
  • • If your dog will destroy the scene, set it on a high bench instead of the floor.
  • • A tiny paper bag “poop bag” next to the elf is optional and very funny.
