Your elf packed a picnic and chose the houseplant as the park. Sit them on the saucer with a napkin blanket and a bottle-cap plate, looking very pleased with the view. It is a two-minute living-room setup that makes the plant you forget to water look like a destination. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. Use a dry saucer, keep soil off the elf, and move any plant that is toxic to pets if your dog or cat will investigate the picnic.

- • A potted houseplant on a saucer
- • A napkin or paper towel
- • A bottle cap or small lid as a plate
- • Optional: tiny books and plants if you want picnic reading material.

Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Pick a friendly plant
Choose a sturdy pot on a table, not a wobbly floor plant kids will knock. Wipe the saucer so the elf is not sitting in leftover water. A succulent or sturdy leaf plant photographs better than a trailing vine that hides the elf.
Step 2: Spread a tiny blanket
Fold a napkin into a square on the saucer or on the table beside the pot. Set a bottle cap or jar lid on it as a plate. Keep real soil in the pot; do not sprinkle dirt as “picnic gravel.”
Step 3: Seat the gardener
Sit your elf on the napkin with their back against the pot, holding the bottle-cap plate. You can also perch them on the pot rim if it is wide and dry. Face them toward the room, not into the leaves.
Step 4: Leave a watering note
Write “Do not water the picnic.” on a sticky note and stick it to the pot. In the morning, let kids “join” with a grape on a neighboring lid, then put the napkin in the laundry. Check that the elf did not pick up wet soil.

- • Skip cactus pots; the joke is not worth a poked kid.
