The couch booked a premiere. Your elf has a sock on one hand, a book for a curtain, and a stuffed animal who bought the only ticket. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.

Use a clean sock. Keep the book standing where it cannot fall on anyone.

You Will Need This:

  • • Your holiday elf
  • • One clean sock
  • • A hardcover book
  • • One stuffed animal

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Raise the curtain

Stand a hardcover book on the couch cushion, opened into a tent, so it looks like a tiny stage.

Step 2: Cast the puppet

Pull the sock onto the elf’s hand, or onto your fingers and then tuck that hand so the sock pops up behind the book. Draw two dot eyes if you want a face.

Step 3: Seat the star

Sit the elf behind the book so the sock hand is the thing the audience sees. The elf’s face peeks over the top, proud. Put the stuffed animal in front, facing the stage.

Step 4: Take a bow

A sticky note on the cushion that says “Encore!” The sock goes back in the drawer. The stuffed animal can stay for the reviews.

Pro Tips:

  • • The sock has to be on the elf, or it is just laundry on a book.
  • • One audience member is a premiere. Five is a pile.
  • • A bright sock reads from across the room.
  • • Skip this on a couch someone needs to sleep on before the reveal.
