Takeoff was a kitchen-counter event. Your elf climbed into a mug, held the straw, and a napkin became the balloon. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.

Tape the straw to the mug, not to the elf. Keep the scene away from the stove.

You Will Need This:

  • • Your holiday elf
  • • A sturdy mug
  • • A straw
  • • A paper napkin and a little tape

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Build the basket

Set a dry mug on the kitchen counter. Tape a straw to the inside wall so it stands up past the rim.

Step 2: Puff the balloon

Pinch a napkin into a loose cloud and tape it to the top of the straw. It should look like a balloon, not a flag.

Step 3: Load the passenger

Sit the elf inside the mug if they fit, or on the rim with legs in the mug. Both hands hold the straw. Chin up, like they can see the whole kitchen from here.

Step 4: Count down

A sticky note on the mug that says “Up we go!” Peel the tape off before anyone uses the mug for a drink.

Pro Tips:

  • • Hands on the straw make the elf the rider. Hands in their lap make it a cup with a doll.
  • • A colorful napkin reads faster than a white one on a white counter.
  • • If the elf tips the mug, drop them to the rim and lean the mug against a book.
  • • One balloon is a ride. A bouquet of napkins is a mess.
