Window-Blind Peek: Slat Spy

Author: Elfie Spot Finder Time: about 2 minutes.

The blinds already make a hide. Tonight the holiday elf is peeking through. Two minutes on the sill. Cords up. This is a window, not a light-show. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.

Gather or clip dangling cords out of reach before you walk away. Sit the elf on the sill. Do not wedge them in the slats or hang them from the valance.

You Will Need This:

  • Your holiday elf
  • A window with blinds
  • The sill
  • Optional: a sticky note on the glass that says "Just looking"

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Set the window

Tilt or raise the blinds so there is a peek gap at kid height. Gather the cords. Clear the sill. Leave the window closed.

Step 2: Pose the elf

Sit the posable elf on the sill, facing the room or peeking through the gap. Hands on the sill. They are sitting, not climbing the slats.

Step 3: Add the tiny details

A "Just looking" note on the glass is enough. Do not add string lights. Do not tape the elf to the blind. Do not open a second-story window for the bit.

Step 4: When kids find it

They find it when they walk past the window. If the sill is behind a couch, leave a path so nobody climbs furniture to see it.

Pro Tips:

  • A first-floor window you already use is enough.
  • Shoot at an angle so you are not in the glass.
  • Cordless blinds are the easy version of this scene.
  • If the cords will not stay up, skip this brief and pick a different room.
