The front-room wreath needed a lookout, and your elf climbed into the greenery like it was a tree stand. Sit them on the wreath’s bottom curve or on the windowsill in front of it, watching the street for Santa traffic. It is a two-minute setup that makes the first window guests see feel like a tiny guard post. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.

Keep the window latched, hang the wreath securely, and do not perch the elf on an open second-story sash.

You Will Need This:

  • • Your holiday elf
  • • A hanging wreath
  • • A front-room windowsill
  • • A ribbon or ornament as a perch

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Latch the window

Close and latch the window you will use. Hang or straighten the wreath so it cannot fall. If the wreath is on the door, use the inside wreath or a wall hook instead of an exterior door that slams.

Step 2: Make a perch

Tie a wide ribbon across the bottom of the wreath as a seat, or clear a spot on the windowsill in front of it. A shatterproof ornament can be a footrest. Keep real candles and plug-in window candles unplugged.

Step 3: Seat the watcher

Sit your elf on the ribbon perch or windowsill with both hands on the wreath, looking outside. You can also tuck them into a thick wreath as if they climbed in. Face them toward the glass so the lookout story is obvious.

Step 4: Leave a street report

Write “No sleigh yet. Still watching.” on a sticky note and stick it to the window frame, not the glass if it will leave residue. In the morning, let kids check the street with the elf, then move them before you open the window. If the wreath is on a door, make sure it cannot pinch the elf when the door closes.

Pro Tips:

  • • A thick faux wreath holds an elf better than a skinny vine wreath.
  • • An inside window wreath is safer than hanging anything on an upstairs sash.
  • • Morning light through the glass makes this one photograph like a postcard.
  • • If the cat climbs wreaths, use a wall hook in the dining room instead.
