The toy dinosaurs were just sitting there, so your elf declared a rodeo. Sit them on a plastic dinosaur’s back, give them a string lasso, and leave a sticky-note scorecard. It is a two-minute playroom stunt that makes the dino bin feel like a stadium. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
Use a stable toy dinosaur on a table or play mat, keep small dinosaur parts away from toddlers, and do not tie string around anyone’s neck.

- • A piece of yarn or string
- • A play mat or coffee table
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Pick a rideable dinosaur
Choose a dinosaur with a wide back, like a triceratops or a chunky T. rex, not a skinny raptor that dumps the elf. Set it on a play mat or table. A standing dino is easier than one with rolling feet.
Step 2: Make a lasso
Coil a short piece of yarn into a loop and set it in the elf’s hands, or lay it over the dinosaur’s horn. Do not tie it around the elf’s neck or a child’s. A rubber band is a worse lasso; skip it.
Step 3: Seat the rider
Sit your elf on the dinosaur with both legs to the sides and the yarn in their hands. If they slide, sit them in front of the dino holding the yarn like they are about to mount. Face the playroom door.
Step 4: Leave the scorecard
Write “Elf: 8 seconds. Dino: unimpressed.” on a sticky note and stick it to the bin. In the morning, let kids add a second dinosaur as a spectator, then put the toys away. Keep yarn out of the toddler’s reach after the photo.
Pro Tips:
- • A plastic dinosaur with a saddle-like back is worth hunting for in the bin.
- • A cowboy hat made from a folded sticky note is optional and very funny.
- • Do this on the coffee table so the ride is at adult photo height.
- • If all your dinos are tiny, sit the elf beside one and call it a livestock inspection.
