Someone has taken the advent calendar very personally. Your elf is posted at today’s door like a tiny inspector who will not approve chocolate until the paperwork is finished. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
If the calendar has small chocolates, keep it up high enough that little kids cannot grab extras before you say go.
You Will Need This:
- • Your holiday elf
- • Your advent calendar
- • A pencil or sticky note for “inspection”
- • Optional: tiny desk calendar if you want a pint-size countdown sitting right next to the real one.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Open only today’s door
Flip or open the current day’s door and leave the rest closed. The unfinished calendar makes it obvious the elf showed up for work, not for a midnight snack raid.
Step 2: Park the elf at the door
Sit the elf so they are peering into the little compartment, one hand on the flap. Kids will think the chocolate had to pass inspection first.
Step 3: Add a tiny “approved” mark
Tuck a sticky note or pencil beside them with a checkmark. The paperwork joke lands even if you only have a scrap of paper from the junk drawer.
Step 4: Leave tomorrow sealed
Make sure tomorrow’s door is still shut tight. Half the fun is kids arguing whether the elf will let them peek early.

- • Do this the night before so the inspector is already on duty at breakfast.
- • If you use a wooden calendar, perch the elf on the ledge under today’s number.
- • A “PASS” scribble in parent handwriting is funnier than a printed sign.
- • Move the treat into a bowl if crumbs would wreck the cardboard doors.
