The bathroom counter booked a circus. Two cups hold a tiny floss tightrope, and your elf is standing in the middle with arms out, deciding whether to look down. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.

Keep the floss on the counter, not on the floor, and throw it away if a toddler might chew it.

You Will Need This:

  • • Your holiday elf
  • • A short piece of dental floss
  • • Two plastic cups
  • • The bathroom counter
  • • Optional: posable holiday elf if you want hands and feet that can hold the pose.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Set two towers

Turn two plastic cups upside down, about a hand-width apart, on a dry counter. Move the toothpaste behind them so it does not steal the scene.

Step 2: String the rope

Tape a short piece of floss from one cup to the other, about as high as the elf’s knees. Short and easy to see is the joke. A long piece across the floor is a trap.

Step 3: Pose the acrobat

Stand the elf between the cups, both hands on the floss, arms out, one foot lifted like the next step is onto the rope. Floss will not hold the elf. The almost-step is the trick.

Step 4: Close the show

A sticky note on one cup that says “Don’t look down!” is the whole act. Toss the floss in the morning.

Pro Tips:

  • • Waxed floss is easier to see. A dark washcloth behind it helps.
  • • Cups you already use as rinse cups are the right height.
  • • One lifted foot sells the circus. Two feet on the counter looks like they are just holding string.
  • • Skip this in a bathroom where toddlers can reach the counter.
