Hat Rack Hideout: Beanie Lookout

The hat rack grew a lookout tower, and the tower is a beanie. Your elf is peeking out of someone’s winter hat like they paid rent in the wool. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
Use a securely hung rack, keep the elf out of a hat that is leaving the house in two minutes, and skip hooks at toddler-pull height if they yank coats.
You Will Need This:
- • Your holiday elf
- • A beanie or winter hat
- • A hat rack, hook, or coat tree
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Pick the squishiest hat
A knit beanie hides an elf better than a stiff baseball cap. The wool fort is the joke.
Step 2: Hang it at kid height
Use a hook they pass on the way to breakfast. A hideout nobody sees is just a hat.
Step 3: Tuck the lookout in
Sit the elf inside so the hat brim is a window. Eyes and hat showing is funnier than a fully buried doll.
Step 4: Leave binoculars
Loop a second hat or scarf beside them like supplies. Kids will decide the elf is on stakeout for the school bus.
Pro Tips:
- • Do this in the kid’s own beanie for maximum “hey!”
- • A sticky note on the hook that says “Shhh” is very funny.
- • Shake crumbs out of the hat first; snack hats are a different gag.
- • Move the elf before anyone actually wears the hat to soccer.
