The mudroom looks like a mitten explosion, and your elf decided to sort the winter gear like a very small coat-check clerk. Pair a few gloves on the bench, leave one lonely mitten, and pose the elf holding the match. It is useful mischief: kids might actually hang their hats afterward. Keep the scene on a bench or hook rail, not in a walkway, and do not block the door in case you need to leave quickly.

Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Stage the gear pile
Drop a small pile of real mittens, hats, and a scarf on the mudroom bench. Make two obvious pairs and leave one mitten by itself. Hang a coat normally so the space still looks like your house, not a store display.
Step 2: Make a matching station
Line the paired mittens in a neat row and put the unmatched one a few inches away. If you have a cubby, sit the work on the lowest kid-height shelf. Keep wet boots on the tray so the elf stays dry.
Step 3: Give the elf the missing mitten
Sit your elf on the bench with the lonely mitten in both hands, looking toward its match. You can also perch them on a hook rail if the hooks are sturdy and the elf cannot fall into boots. Face the door so kids see the sorter on the way to breakfast.
Step 4: Leave the checklist
Write “One mitten still missing. Check the dryer.” on a sticky note and stick it to the wall. In the morning, let kids finish the matching job, then hang the pairs. It is a great night to actually start the lost-mitten search.
