The key bowl got a night guard, and the guard does not trust anyone with the minivan. Your elf is sitting on the spare keys like the school run is a classified mission. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
Keep real car keys with you if you need them at dawn; use a spare ring in the bowl, and keep the bowl off the floor.
You Will Need This:
- • Your holiday elf
- • The entryway key bowl or dish
- • A spare key ring (not the only car key)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Stage the drop zone
Use the bowl by the door where keys actually land. The joke only works in the real chaos spot.
Step 2: Swap in a spare ring
Put a spare or decorative key ring in the bowl and keep the real car key in your pocket. Funny should not make you late.
Step 3: Seat the keeper
Sit the elf on the rim or on the keys with arms crossed. They should look like they will need a password.
Step 4: Add a sticky-note password
Write “What’s the magic word?” and stick it to the bowl. Kids will shout “please” at a doll, which is still a parenting win.

- • A coin or leftover grocery token makes extra “treasure.”
- • Do this after everyone is home for the night.
