Table Leg Lookout: Under-Table Scout

The best scouting post in the house is halfway down a table leg, and your elf claimed it. Sit them at the base with a napkin flag, peeking toward the kitchen like they are reporting on pancake traffic. It is a two-minute setup that makes kids drop to the floor, which is half the fun. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
Keep the elf out of a kick zone, warn family not to shove chairs in, and skip this if someone will not see them and step on the doll.

- • A napkin or sticky-note flag
- • A placemat as a scout camp
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Pick a visible leg
Choose the table leg that faces the kitchen, not the one buried in a corner. Pull the nearest chair out slightly so the elf is visible from a kid’s height. Sweep crumbs so the camp is not also a snack.
Step 2: Make a tiny camp
Lay a small placemat or napkin at the base of the leg. Stick a sticky-note flag to the wood with removable putty or just lean it, without taping the doll. A bottle cap can be a lookout drum.
Step 3: Seat the scout
Sit your elf against the table leg with both hands on the flag, looking toward the room. You can also have them peek around the leg like a game of hide-and-seek. Keep them off the exact spot where chairs scrape in.
Step 4: Leave a scout report
Write “Pancakes incoming from the west.” on a sticky note and stick it to the chair seat. In the morning, let kids crawl under to “relieve the watch,” then push chairs in carefully. Pick the elf up before anyone sits down hard.

- • A light-colored napkin makes the camp visible in table shadow.
- • Do this at breakfast so kids are already at the table.
- • If you have a tablecloth that hangs low, tuck it up so the elf is not invisible.
- • A second flag on the chair leg turns it into a two-post scout line.
