The dryer ate another sock, so your elf built a monster trap in the laundry basket. Pile unmatched socks, leave a “bait” sock in the middle, and sit the elf like they have been on stakeout all night. Keep the basket on the floor out of a walkway, and do not let kids climb into the washer or dryer looking for the monster.

- • A laundry basket
- • Several unmatched socks
- • A sticky-note “wanted” poster
- • Optional: six-pack of doll socks if you want elf-size bait socks.
- • Optional: tiny laundry basket with clothes if you want a mini trap sitting next to the real basket.
- • Optional: pack of yellow sticky notes if you want a bigger "wanted" poster.
- • Optional: tiny washer if you want the prime suspect parked next to the trap.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Gather the evidence
Collect unmatched socks from the laundry room and drop them into a basket. Keep the washer and dryer closed and off. A few kid socks plus one giant adult sock makes the “monster” joke obvious.
Step 2: Set the bait
Lay one especially lonely sock in the center as bait, with the others circled around it. A wooden spoon across the basket can be a “tripwire” that is not actually attached to anything. Keep detergent bottles closed.
Step 3: Put the hunter on watch
Sit your elf on the basket rim or behind the sock pile peeking over, with one sock in both hands. You can also hide them under a sock with just the hat showing. Face the laundry-room door.
Step 4: Hang the wanted poster
Write “Wanted: sock monster. Last seen in the dryer.” on a sticky note and stick it to the washer. In the morning, let kids search the basket, then actually match a pair if you can. Keep kids from opening the dryer door unsupervised.
