Coat Closet Stakeout: Coat Check

Author: Elfie Spot Finder. Time: about 2 minutes.

The coat closet is already a mess. Tonight the holiday elf is on coat-check duty, sitting on a shelf, watching the hangers. Two minutes, door left ajar, no hanging stunts. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.

Do not hang the elf from a rod or a hanger hook. Do not block the closet door. Keep the floor clear so nobody trips on boots.

You Will Need This:

  • • Your holiday elf
  • • The coat closet you already use
  • • One empty hanger
  • • A shelf, cubby, or sturdy box that can hold the elf
  • • Optional: a sticky note that says "Tickets, please"

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Set the scene

Open the closet. Push boots back so the floor is a walk path. Leave one hanger empty at kid eye line.

Step 2: Pose the elf

Sit the posable elf on a shelf or a cubby, facing the coats. One hand can rest on the empty hanger if it is on the shelf, not swinging from the rod.

Step 3: Add the tiny details

A note on the hanger or the shelf is enough. Leave the door cracked so the scene is visible without anyone digging.

Step 4: When kids find it

They find it when they grab a coat. Move the elf before the morning rush if that closet is the only place for backpacks.

Pro Tips:

  • • A shelf is safer than a rod. Do not clip the elf to a hanger.
  • • If the closet is a black hole, turn on the hall light and shoot from the doorway.
  • • Skip chemical bottles and loose change on the same shelf.
  • • This is not an outdoor camping scene. Keep it to the closet you already have.
