The banister is already the first thing kids pass. Tonight the holiday elf is on lookout, sitting, not hanging. Two minutes. No string. No zip line. If the rail is thin, use the newel cap or the landing floor. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
The elf sits. They do not hang, slide, or ride a string. This is not a zip line. Do not block a tread or the handrail path. No tape on the rail if it leaves residue a hand needs.
You Will Need This:
- • Your holiday elf
- • A newel post cap, a wide landing, or a stair-safe shelf beside the rail
- • Optional: a sticky note that says "All clear"
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Pick the sit spot
Choose the newel cap at the bottom, or the landing, not a narrow mid-rail. The elf must sit on a flat that will not dump them down the stairs.
Step 2: Pose the elf
Sit the posable elf facing the room they are watching. Hands on their knees. No string, no ribbon, no dangling. If they wobble, move them to the landing floor by the post.
Step 3: Add the tiny details
An "All clear" note on the wall beside the post is enough. Do not wrap the rail. Hands still need that rail in the dark.
Step 4: When kids find it
They find it on the first trip downstairs. Move the elf before the morning rush if that rail is the only hold.
Pro Tips:
- • Sitting. If you are tempted to hang them, stop and pick a different room.
- • Bottom newel is easier to reach than the top. No climb.
- • A landing plant stand beside the stairs is a safer lookout than a skinny rail.
- • This is a watch, not a ride.
