Umbrella Stand Guard: Rainy Day Watch

The umbrella stand needed a sentry, and your elf took the rainy-day watch very seriously. Park them on the rim of a dry crock with a compact umbrella as a lance, waiting for weather that may or may not arrive. Use a dry umbrella stand, keep the elf off wet puddles, and keep long umbrellas from toppling onto kids.
You Will Need This:
- • Your holiday elf
- • An umbrella stand or tall crock
- • One compact umbrella
- • The entryway rug
- • Optional: tiny umbrellas if you want a doll-size umbrella already planted in the stand.
- • Optional: tiny trunk suitcase if you want it looking like the elf just got back from a trip.
- • Optional: tiny wall hook if you want a spot above the stand for the elf's umbrella.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Dry the post
Empty any water from the stand and wipe it dry. Set it on the entry rug, not in a puddle. If you do not have a stand, a tall vase or crock by the coats works.
Step 2: Plant a compact umbrella
Stand one closed compact umbrella in the crock as the “flagpole.” Leave long umbrellas leaning so they cannot fall. Open umbrellas overnight are a trip hazard; keep them closed.
Step 3: Seat the guard
Sit your elf on the stand rim with both hands on the compact umbrella, or stand them on a nearby shoe bench looking at the door. If you have tiny umbrellas, give them one as a parasol. Face the front door.
Step 4: Leave the weather watch
Write “Rain watch. Boots on the tray.” on a sticky note and stick it to the door. In the morning, let kids salute the guard on the way to breakfast, then put wet umbrellas in the stand after the elf is moved. Wipe the rim if anyone came in dripping.
