Your elf skipped the chairs and camped under the breakfast table. Drape a tablecloth or extra sheet as a fort, add a napkin sleeping bag, and sit them inside with a flashlight that stays off. It is a two-minute campout that makes kids crawl under the table before they eat their cereal. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.

Keep chairs from being shoved in on the elf, use a cool flashlight that is switched off, and do not leave a real candle under the table.

You Will Need This:

  • • Your holiday elf
  • • A dining table
  • • A tablecloth or extra sheet
  • • A napkin and a small flashlight
  • • Optional: mini tent set if you want a doll-size tent already pitched under the table.
  • • Optional: tiny table and chairs if you want a dining room inside the fort.
  • • Optional: tiny fireplace if you want a campfire with no flame.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Pitch the breakfast fort

Drape a tablecloth or extra sheet over one side of the table so it makes a tent wall, leaving an opening kids can see into. Do not cover the whole table if people need to eat. Pull one chair out as a door.

Step 2: Make a sleeping bag

Roll a napkin or washcloth as a sleeping bag and set it on a placemat “ground cloth.” Set a flashlight beside it, switched off. If you have a mini tent, pitch that instead of the sheet.

Step 3: Put the camper to bed

Lay your elf on the napkin with a stuffed animal or bottle cap as a pillow. You can also sit them at the tent door like they are watching for pancakes. Face the opening so they are visible from the kitchen.

Step 4: Leave the camp rules

Write “Quiet hours until cereal.” on a sticky note and stick it to the table edge. In the morning, let kids visit the fort, then lift the cloth so nobody trips. Move the elf before you push all the chairs in.

Pro Tips:

  • • A light-colored sheet lets more light into the fort for photos.
  • • Do this on a weekend breakfast so nobody is late while crawling.
  • • A mini tent is worth it if you already bought one for another night.
  • • A banana on a plate at the tent door is a very funny “camp breakfast.”
