Blanket Ladder: Cozy Climbing Course

Published on September 1, 2026
The couch became a mountain overnight. Your elf is halfway up a draped blanket, looking determined, slightly stuck, and extremely pleased with the route. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
Drape the blanket over the couch cushions instead of hanging it as a trip line, and do not stack chairs for extra height.
You Will Need This:
- • Your holiday elf
- • A throw blanket
- • The couch or an armchair
- • Optional: tiny white sofa if you want a little summit for the elf to aim at.
- • Optional: tiny step ladder if you want the elf to have a real ladder to ignore.
- • Optional: doll blanket and pillow set if you want a blanket that's actually elf-size.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Turn the throw into a cliff
Drape a throw so it hangs down the front of the couch in gentle folds, like a climbing wall made of fleece. Kids see a mountain before they even spot the elf.
Step 2: Pinch a few handholds
Tuck two or three folds so they look like ledges. You are not building a fort; you are giving the elf somewhere to “grip.”
Step 3: Clip the climber on
Hook the elf’s legs over a fold halfway up, one arm reaching for the next ledge. Mid-climb is funnier than perched at the top like they already won.
Step 4: Leave a “base camp”
Set a mug or stuffed animal at the bottom like a spotter. Kids will narrate the rescue before they even sit down for cartoons.
Pro Tips:
- • A textured throw photographs better than a slippery satin one.
- • Keep the blanket off walking paths so nobody trips in the dark.
- • If the elf slides, pin them with a hidden clothespin under the fold.
- • Do this after bedtime so the “course” is the first thing they see from the hallway.
