Somebody interrupted story time and refused to give the bookmark back. Your elf is wedged in a favorite picture book like the plot cannot continue without them. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
Choose a sturdy hardcover or board book so pages do not tear, and keep the shelf climb-free for toddlers.
You Will Need This:
- • Your holiday elf
- • A favorite picture book
- • A bookmark, ribbon, or scrap of paper
- • Optional: tiny bookcase with mini books if you want the bandit to have a library of their own.
- • Optional: tiny books that open if you want the elf writing their own sequel.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Pick the book they love
Pull the current bedtime favorite so the heist feels personal. Kids laugh harder when it is their dragon story, not a random cookbook.
Step 2: Open to a funny page
Crack the book to a picture with a lot of action and lay it flat on the shelf or coffee table. The elf looks like they paused the story mid-chase.
Step 3: Steal the bookmark
Tuck a ribbon or paper bookmark into the elf’s hands or under one arm. They are not reading; they are holding the page hostage.
Step 4: Sit them in the gutter
Nestle the elf in the center fold so they look stuck between chapters. That “I live here now” pose is what kids will copy with stuffed animals later.
Pro Tips:
- • A board book survives the pose better than a floppy paperback.
- • Leave the next book in the series closed nearby like a waiting queue.
- • If the elf slides, a tiny loop of washi tape on the page is invisible in photos.
- • Do this on the kid’s reading chair so they find it at story time, not in a dark hallway.
