Cardboard Box Castle: Living Room Kingdom

A delivery box became a kingdom while you were asleep. Your elf is on the throne (a wadded packing paper cushion), and the living room is now technically a monarchy. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
Use a clean, dry box with no staples sticking out, and keep scissors away from kids if you cut a door.
You Will Need This:
- • Your holiday elf
- • A small shipping box
- • A bit of packing paper or a dish towel “flag”
- • Optional: tiny shipping box kit if you want a pile of little fold-it-yourself crates stacked at the castle gate.
- • Optional: tiny step ladder if you want a wee way up the castle wall.
- • Optional: tiny wrapped gift boxes if you want a royal treasury piled up inside the castle.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Park the box on the rug
Set a small shipping box on its side so the opening faces the room like a castle gate. Kids see a fort before they see a recycling pile.
Step 2: Make a lazy throne
Wad packing paper into a cushion and sit the elf just inside the opening. They should look like they claimed the box, not like they got shipped by accident.
Step 3: Raise a towel flag
Tuck a dish towel or tissue out the top flap like a banner. Movement from a hallway vent makes the kingdom look extra official.
Step 4: Station a stuffed-animal knight
Stand a stuffed animal outside as a guard. Kids will immediately start assigning jobs, which is how you get ten more minutes of peace.

- • A shoe box is plenty; you do not need an appliance carton.
- • Draw a tiny window with marker if you have thirty extra seconds.
- • Flatten the box after breakfast so it does not become a week-long fort war.
- • Skip packing peanuts; they scatter and look like a mess, not a castle.
