Your elf stole a bookmark and a paperback and turned the nightstand into a reading nook. Prop a book open, click the lamp to the lowest setting, and sit them against the spine like they waited up for one more chapter. It is quiet mischief, which somehow makes kids whisper when they find it. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
Use a cool lamp or leave it off, keep cords tucked, and do not set the elf on a nightstand crowded with glasses of water that can spill.
You Will Need This:

- • A paperback or picture book
- • A bookmark or scrap of ribbon
- • A nightstand lamp
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Clear a reading shelf
Move water glasses, phones, and charging cords to the far side of the nightstand. Stand a paperback or thick picture book slightly open so it makes a V-shaped nook. A board book is sturdier if the elf is heavy.
Step 2: Add the bookmark
Slip a real bookmark or ribbon into the pages a few sheets from the front, as if the elf just started. If you have a tiny reading light, leave it off and unplugged. A pair of kid sunglasses nearby can pretend to be reading glasses.
Step 3: Seat the reader
Sit your elf in the open book with their back against one cover and a “page” in their hands. You can also lay them on top of a closed book with the bookmark across their lap. Angle the lamp shade so morning light hits the book, not the elf’s face into shadow.
Step 4: Leave a lights-out note
Write “One more chapter. Then sleep.” on a sticky note and stick it to the lamp base. In the morning, let kids pick the next bedtime book before you reset the nightstand. Turn the lamp fully off if you left it on a low setting overnight.

- • A picture book with a bright cover photographs better than a dense adult paperback.
- • If the nightstand is tiny, use a closed book as a bed and skip the open-V.
- • A ribbon bookmark looks more “library” than a grocery receipt.
