Button Detective: Desk Case File

Published on October 7, 2026
A button went missing and your elf opened a case. They are on the desk with a glass for a magnifier, and the footprints lead straight to the suspect. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
Use a plastic cup or a sturdy glass, and keep it away from the edge of the desk.
You Will Need This:
- • Your holiday elf
- • One button
- • A clear plastic cup
- • A sheet of paper and a pencil
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Open the file
Lay one sheet of paper on the desk. Draw five little footprints that end at a circle. That circle is where the clue sits.
Step 2: Plant the clue
Set one button in the circle. Turn a clear plastic cup on its side or hold it so the button shows through the bottom like a magnifying glass.
Step 3: Hire the detective
Kneel or lean the elf over the paper, one hand holding the cup above the button, the other hand pointing at the footprints. Face close to the clue. This only works if the elf is investigating, not sitting nearby.
Step 4: Name the culprit
A sticky note that says “The button did it.” Kids can draw the next clue. The pencil goes back in the cup afterward.
Pro Tips:
- • A big button reads from the doorway. A tiny one looks like lint.
- • The pointing hand is what makes it a detective scene.
- • Face the desk toward the chair a kid actually uses.
- • Skip real magnifying glasses with loose lenses.
