The shoes are already in a pile. Tonight that pile is a pit stop. The holiday elf is sitting on a pair, taking a break from the entryway chaos. Two minutes, no new props. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.

Keep the elf off the walk path. No laces around the neck. Do not stack shoes so they slide into the door.

You Will Need This:

  • Your holiday elf
  • Two or three pairs of shoes that already live by the door
  • The entry bench, cubby, or a clear patch of floor beside the walk path
  • Optional: a sticky note that says "Fuel stop"

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Set the scene

Pull two pairs out of the walk path. Make a small stall: one pair as a seat, one pair as a bumper. Leave the door swing clear.

Step 2: Pose the elf

Sit the posable elf on a shoe or on the bench above the pile. Legs can dangle. Do not tie them in with laces.

Step 3: Add the tiny details

A note on a sole or the bench is enough. Tuck laces in so they do not loop. If you have a shoehorn, lean it like a fuel hose.

Step 4: When kids find it

They see it when they put shoes on. Move the elf before anyone steps over the pile.

Pro Tips:

  • Use a clean pair you can spare. Skip the wet boots.
  • A bench reads cleaner than the middle of the rug.
  • If a toddler crawls here, put the elf on the bench, not the floor.
  • You do not need a toy car or a garage set. Shoes are the gag.
