Oven Mitt Campout: Counter Sleeping Bag

Published on October 9, 2026
The campout never left the kitchen counter. Your elf crawled into an oven mitt like a sleeping bag and nodded off in the middle of a story. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.
Use a cool, dry mitt. Keep it far from the stove and any hot pans.
You Will Need This:
- • Your holiday elf
- • A clean oven mitt
- • A small board book
- • The kitchen counter
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Make the bag
Lay the oven mitt on its side on the kitchen counter, opening facing you. Shake out crumbs first.
Step 2: Tuck the camper
Slide the elf in so the hat and face stick out of the opening. The body should disappear into the mitt. If they will not fit, lay them on the mitt and fold the cuff over their legs.
Step 3: Leave the story open
Open a board book beside the mitt, one page under the elf’s hand, like they fell asleep reading. Eyes closed if the doll can do it. A tiny smile is enough.
Step 4: Whisper the note
A sticky note on the book that says “Five more minutes.” The mitt goes back on its hook before breakfast cooking.
Pro Tips:
- • The hat has to poke out or kids will not find the elf.
- • A bright mitt reads as a sleeping bag from across the kitchen.
- • Skip a hot mitt. The joke is camping, not baking.
- • A cotton ball by the opening is a pillow if you want one extra.
