Stand a full roll on the counter, peel a short banner of paper, and perch the elf on top like a lookout who packed lunch but forgot a ladder. Use a standing roll on a dry counter, keep the elf off the stove, and do not let kids yank the roll while the elf is still on top.

Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Plant the tower
Set a full paper-towel roll on its holder, or stand it in a heavy mug if your holder is a spinning one. Place it on a clear stretch of counter away from the stove and sink. A shorter roll is easier if your elf is wobbly.
Step 2: Unfurl a banner
Unroll one or two sheets and let them hang like a flag, not a floor trail. Fold the loose end so it does not drag into water. If you want extra chaos, make a tiny paper hat from the torn sheet and set it beside the roll.
Step 3: Seat the lookout
Sit your elf on top of the roll with legs dangling, or wrap one arm around the cardboard tube. If they slide, sit them on the counter at the base holding the hanging sheet like they just climbed down. Face the kitchen doorway.
Step 4: Plant the tower flag
Write “High ground claimed.” on a sticky note, stick it to the hanging sheet, and leave the rest of the roll usable. In the morning, let kids take a photo, then tear off the banner sheet so breakfast cleanup still has towels. Do not leave the elf up there if someone will grab a towel half-asleep.
