The utensil crock became a playground, and a spatula is the see-saw. Balance it on a wooden spoon or mug, sit the elf on one end, and maybe perch a marshmallow or bottle cap on the other. It is a two-minute kitchen park that makes stirring spoons look like they have been slacking. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.

Use a dry counter, keep the see-saw from launching anything toward faces, and keep knives in the block.

You Will Need This:

  • • Your holiday elf
  • • A spatula
  • • A wooden spoon or mug as the fulcrum
  • • A bottle cap or marshmallow as the other rider

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Pick a playground counter

Clear a dry stretch of counter away from the stove. Set a wooden spoon or an overturned mug as the fulcrum. A silicone spatula flexes; a metal one is a stiffer board.

Step 2: Build the see-saw

Lay the spatula across the fulcrum so one end is slightly down. Put a bottle cap, marshmallow, or second spoon on the high end. Do not make it so tippy that the elf will hit the floor.

Step 3: Seat the rider

Sit your elf on the low end with both hands on the spatula handle. Bend their knees so they look like they are ready to bounce. If they slide, sit them closer to the fulcrum.

Step 4: Post the playground rules

Write “One elf at a time.” on a sticky note and stick it to the backsplash. In the morning, let kids gently tip the see-saw once, then put the utensils back in the crock. Skip marshmallows if you have a toddler who will eat the prop.

Pro Tips:

  • • A mug fulcrum is more stable than a round spoon that rolls.
  • • A turner with a wide head gives the elf a better seat than a skinny spatula.
  • • Photograph from the side so the tilt is obvious.
  • • If the cat is a counter-surfer, skip overnight and do a before-school setup.
