Recycling Sort Shift: Bin Night

Author: Elfie Spot Finder Time: about 2 minutes.

The recycling bin is already a job. Tonight the holiday elf took a sort shift. Two minutes. Clean items only. This is not a trash-can prank. If you already have a posable holiday elf, skip to the recipe. If you don't, start with the setup kit.

Rinse glass and cans. Keep broken glass out of the scene. Sit the elf on a closed lid or on the floor beside the bin, not inside a bin with sharp edges.

You Will Need This:

  • • Your holiday elf
  • • The recycling bin or the sort caddy
  • • Two clean items (a rinsed can and a flattened box, or paper and a bottle)
  • • Optional: a sticky note that says "Cans here"

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Set the sort

Park the bin where it already lives. Set two clean items on the closed lid or on the floor in two piles. No broken glass. No food still in a container.

Step 2: Pose the elf

Sit the posable elf on the closed lid or on the floor beside the piles, hands on one item. They stay outside the bin.

Step 3: Add the tiny details

A "Cans here" note on the lid is enough. Do not dump the bin for the photo. Do not add a second gag with garbage.

Step 4: When kids find it

They find it when someone takes a box to the bin. Put the real recycling back after they see it if the floor pile is in the walkway.

Pro Tips:

  • • A closed lid is a seat. An open bin is a hazard.
  • • Rinse the can. Overnight juice is not a bit.
  • • If the bin lives in the garage, stage it just inside the kitchen door so kids actually find it.
  • • Flatten one box. That is the whole sort.
